Hunts Pass, 6700 ft., Chelan Co. Wash.
right, into a very wet meadow, where there
were still fairly large patches of snow. There was
much running water from melt, but a few
more sloping areas were dry, indicating
that when the snow melts it will be much
drier. The elevation of this little valley is
about 200 ft. higher than the pass, or about
6400, tho I have used the pass as my
locality - it is perhaps 1 mi. N.E. There is
no brush, except for the lower, heat-down
branches of the firs and some younger firs.
The grass and herbs, some flowering, are
only 3-4 inches high. Collected the same
area in the afternoon, but walked up to
to the top of Slate Peak late in the afternoon.
In the morning it was dark & cloudy, with
frequent drizzle, and it snowed a little at
noon. Shortly after noon the sun came out
and it got quite warm, but also got very
windy. As I walked up the mt. it drizzled
more, & snowed a little more. All in all it
was a bad day. Following birds noted today:
Robin
White-crowned Sparrow
Savannah Sparrow
Canada Jay
Ruby-crowned Kinglet
Hermit Thrush
Mountain Chickadee
Oregon Junco
Mountain Bluebird
Lewcstite
