Aug 6 Mosquito Lake, 800ft. 2mi W Lookout Peak, Alpine Co. Calif.
A group of at least 3 red crossbills came into the pines at the end of this lake, E side. Shot one from the top of a pine (good distance) and it drifted to a big pile of rocks. While retrieving it, saw 2 more, one on top of a small (10-15 ft.) pine, and one flying away. Shot the one in the tree. First one put up (Aug 12) was a ♀, fat deposits heavy under all feather tracts. Left testis 5 x 3 mm. long, skull completely double-layered. The wings are in molt, with the 1st or 2nd primaries just coming in. (PEB 355). The second bird is also ♀, testes 4mm diameter, yellow, round. Heavy fat deposits under skin, Still completely double-layer. (356).
