Banks 1960 Journal June 9 Hog Flat Reservoir, 5480 ft. Lassen Co. Calif. - The area around here is all grazed. The marshy lands a mile or so SW of the Reservoir have willows in them, and there are Redwillows, Yellow Willows, + Sage Sparsous. The forest is mostly Yellow Pine second growth. Bogard Campground, 5600 ft. Lassen Co. Calif. Arrived here and set-up camp in mid afternoon. This is the area referred to as the meadows around Bogard Ranger Station in Grinnell, Dixon, + Lindsay's Lassen Section. The ranger station has moved about 1 mile down (W) the road. Near the old sta. is a cow camp - small house, corral, loading chute, etc. Family lives there, runs horses + a few cows in nearby pasture. There is a really extensive flat here - probably 1x2 mi. It is surrounded by by pine forest, small clumps of trees in the flat. Pine Creek A good stream runs through, with trout, from W to E, but may not make it clear through. Near the stream, esp. the NW part of the flat, it is very green and lush. Good grass, willows along the stream. This area is mostly fenced off used for pasture. Although there are green patches in the rest of the flat, most of it is sage brush. Soil is very red. A road runs through the flat, roughly N-S. The campground is at the W edge of the flat, just in the forest. Trees are mostly pine, but a good number of poplars right in camp and along the stream.
