May 9 Mendocino County coast Caly - north, the
Violet-green Swallows seemed to replace Barn
Swallows. Went as far as Westport, then came
south again. The best area so far is around
Ten Mile River. Stopped at small beach a
couple miles S of Westport, got frogs, no birds.
Picked up a couple of garter snakes. Back at
Ten Mile River the Foster Brothers gave me
permission to collect on their property.
During the rest of the afternoon worked in
brushy fields, much like the Bolinas area.
Saw War-tit, Cal Trail not much else.
Extremely windy. Ten Mile River here
has a very broad flood plain, met with
a few channels. There are Redwings. Swallows
are feeding over it. Camped at State Park
May 10 a couple miles N of Fort Bragg. Back at
mouth of Ten Mile River - early this a.m.
saw Osprey, Mallard, Great Blue Heron,
Redwing. Collected again on Foster's place.
Saw White-crowned Sparrow, Song Sparrow,
Amer. Goldfinch, Flicker, War-tit, Cliff
Swallows (nesting under bridge over Ten Mile River,
as well as Foster house) Barn Swallow, Vaux
Swift, Caly Trail, Rough Winged Swallow,
Pileated Woodpecker, Cowbird, Turkey Vulture,
Savanna Sparrow, Yellow Warbler, Anna's
Hummingbird. Left this area about 4pm.
