Oct. 11, 1960 Hashell Ranch, 10 mi. S Marysville, Yuba C., Calif.
With Ned Johnson, Gene Christman and Bob Payne
visited this ranch and the duck club of A.S.
Leopold, to see the breeding colony of Agelaius
tricolor (q.v.) that Gene had reported finding 10
days previous. Arrived here about 11:30 am.
Spent 4 hours shooting (+shooting at) blackbirds,
and scouting the area. Left about 3:30 or so.
Besides tricolors, the following species were seen:
Long-billed Marsh Wren, Redwing, Savannah
Sparrow, Water Pipit, Killdeer, Sharp-shinned
Hawk, White-crowned Sparrow (Barnes), Sparrow
Hawk, Turkey Vulture, Red-tailed Hawk, Marsh
Hawk, Western Meadowlark, Goo?, Mallard, Baldpate.
Also saw some smaller ducks (?Teal?) and some
sandpipers I couldn't identify.
Oct. 16 Grovock Ranch, [W of Santa Rosa, Sonoma C., Calif.]?
There were a good many birds around here on
this warm sunny day. Collected 1 Zonotrichia atri-
capilla. Saw: Plain Thrush, Bewick Wren, Polio,
Brown Towhee, Rufous-sided Towhee, White-created
Nuthatch, Black Phoebe, Wren-tit, Ruby-crowned
Kinglet, Golden-crowned Sparrow, Goldfinch sp., heard
a Mockingbird (perhaps Thrasher) and flocks of Black-
birds flying over to the SW.
