Barks 1960 Zonotrichia leucophrys 5. June 21 2 min S, 5 1/2 mi E Detroit, 2000 ft. Marion G. O-?on another appeared in a nearby tree, set chirping "peant". 8334 Got it too. This area is adjoinant to the road, which is right by the N. Section Pile. It extends for about 1/2 mile along the road, somewhat less into the hills. A cross section would appear like this: forest After taking these 4 birds in rapid succession, half an hour or so, most of the area is quiet, but I can hear one, perhaps 2 birds singing at the other end of the area. It is quite windy here. Heard another bird sing -- ???. There are 2 distinct song types here. As I neared the West of this area, I could see that the topo sheet shows it very well, and that the above profile, drawn for the N-S axis, fits equally well for the E-W axis. (Will City quad, USGS, 1929). June 22 This morning at 0730 I can hear 2 birds singing -- both have a song as the last described above -- ???, except that one adds a trill -- ?? - ----. But this last bird (835) sometimes leaves the trill off his song. On my way up the hill I flushed a ? from the same nest as yesterday, so it wasn't her that I got second yest- erday. Couldn't get her now, either. Saw a bird with what seemed like a mouthful of insects. As soon as I got her, another (836-837) began to "peant" right there -- am sure those are mates. Can see and hear another bird singing -- ?? - ?, the basic song with one additional note.
