Babs 1959 2 cowbird lemophy. 9. May 9 Mendocino, Calf., coast line - start with only one long note, and all have a till that does not go far down the scale, although it may be rather long. Just north of Caspar there is a field with extensive brush, and although I can hear Western Meadowlark, I do not hear any White-orn song. A little ways further a road extends in this zone similar but less dense brush - here I heard a few birds. This "brush" is mostly high weedy herbs, not "scrub" material. North of Fort Bragg, as far as Ten Mile River, the habitat is good and the birds seem reasonably common. About 1/2 mi. N/ of Ten Mile River I shot birds 1030h. - 1115h. 1-6 for this trip, along a stretch where the old road pulls off & parallels the new one. These birds were in Bachman's along the road or in fence-line brush. Rather did not see or could not get their mates. Further north, clear to Westport, the brush along the road has these birds in it, and the slopes are pretty bushy, at least in the draws. It appears that White-orn habitat is pretty continuous north of Fort Bragg. Drove on to Westport; saw birds + good habitat all the way. Back to mouth of Ten Mile River. The Fosteri Bros. said OK to collect on their land. Chris
