Zonotrichia leucophrys
25 Apr. 2. 9 mi S, 3.7 mi E. Stewart's Point, near level, Sonoma Co. Calif.
had crossed a gully - it landed atop a clump of ferns.
No. 11 flushed from a pine onto a dense clump of
brush, 3 ft. high. Did not go in brush, sat on top.
#12 was one of 2 birds, shot from a pine. When
the 2 flew a couple times, gave notes which I
associate with copulation or begging (for copulation).
Aq.m., #13 was a bird I had wounded this am. #14
was feeding in short, sheep-grazed grass - it
wounded mate got into dense brush. #15 was
in pine. 16 was in short grass, near a clump
of dense brush. #17 was singing near car.
Summary - In general, birds today were quiet.
It is a cloudy + rainy day, & they are staying
in the inside of the pines. Little singing. Not
extremely abundant here - probably 20 pairs
in this area of .9 x .25 miles. See journal.
11 May Berkeley - today starting to put up specimens
sent by R. Robert S. Hoffman, Montana State Univ,
These birds were collected in 1958-1959 in various
parts of Montana and are cataloged in there
localities. My numbers run from 753 upward.
The birds were injected with formalin and
frozen. On the journey here they partly thawed
and were - frozen here for 2 weeks or so. Weight
may be off some because of formalin. Correspondence
covning these birds is in MV2 file, early 1960.
Note: Could have only parts of those birds.
