June 17 Todd Lake, 19 mi W, 1/2 mi S Bend, 6168 ft., Deschutes Co., Oregon.
along this road as far as I want. However, most
of the country is under up to 4 ft. of snow. I don't
if this will be open for 2 weeks. The stream is runny
full, from meltwater, and there are places where
the ground is bare, esp. around tree bases and clumps.
There are small willows along the stream, and
rather thick evergreen at the meadow edge, but not
enough open country - yet for White-crowned. I get
the impression, however, that it would be suitable
habitat. Willows are all small, not yet in leaf. It
resembles the situation last July 1-4 at Hart's
Pass, Wash., except there is more snow here. Saw
Mt. Chickadees Chipping Sparrows in copulation (not
# mileage from
together). Pine Siskins are in flocks of 6 or 8. USGS map.
Elkh Lake, 4960+ft Deschutes Co., Oregon - About 4pm.
took a walk due W of the campground, which is on
the W side of the lake. It was very quiet. Saw a
family of gray jays. Pygmy Owl calls attracted
Chickadees + nuthatches, and a Hermit Thrush, which
I collected. A pygmy owl answered from a long
ways off and finally came in (5:30pm.) but I didn't
set it. This is forest land, perhaps 100 ft. above the
lake. Pinus contorta dominates down low, but just
a bit higher, there are mostly hemlock. Set 5 mouse
traps in grassy wet area at edge of lake and
catched a toad while setting them. Will put up
linds tomorrow. // Nothing in traps.
