Banks 1959 Zonotrichia leucophrys May 9 Mendocino Co, Calif. coastline - Just the coastal highway just S of Allion. Between this junction & the city, saw a White-crow in the road. Going farther N., saw no more birds. In much of this area, e.g. from Allion to Little River, the Redwoods & pines come to the road, sometimes almost to the shore. The area is almost lacking in coastal "plain", and what there is is just grass - often sheep grazed - with none of the typical coastal scrub. There appears to be very little sparrow habitat, and the birds are not obvious, if present at all. Just N of the city of Mendocino saw a bird fly across the road to my left, & it sang just as I passed it. I heard one long note followed by a rather descending series of shorter notes, but w/o the range of tone heard in the Bay area. At the headlands of Russian Gulch State Park a couple miles N of Mendocino, there is some very low, scattered Barbara's, and there are some White- crows here. One ship starting with a single fairly low note, then a still starting higher and descending only a little, with a peculiar twist on the end; - ----. Others lack the twist but all seem to
