May 13 Mendocino Co. coast, Calif. - On return,
drove back to Albion (see notes on
Zonotrichia leucophrys for this weeked).
Altho I saw no birds (White-crowned)
between Mendocino and Albion, I feel
from second look that there is a
little habitat available, and that a
scattering of birds could live in this
area, but they must be scattered
widely. Drove from Albion 5 to Elk,
saw birds along the road. There
seems to be better habitat here - more brush.
May 24 Prosser Cr., 5600 ft., 1 mi. S., 2 mi. E Hotat Mills View, Co. Calif.
Arrived here about 9 A.M. with Ned K. Johnson.
The area is a junction of sagebrush and
second growth Jeffrey Pine. Ned worked the
pine to the East for Empidonax. Prosser
Creek has a wide valley here - the stream
is 30-35 ft. wide here, 1 1/2 ft. deep (probably).
It is bordered with grass, mainly,
with scattered low (4 ft.) willows and
willow thickets. I worked downstream
mainly, starting about 3/4 mi. from where
the stream crosses the road. The willows
seen thicks upstream, toward the road,
where there were several fishermen.
The slopes of the low valley (10 ft. slope)
are sparsely covered with Sage (Artemisia)
