pasture. Then the 3 birds flew across the road to
a row of Eucalyptus; this bird was shot from
one of these trees Which Bacharas lining the
fence now.
The second bird (336) was
sitting in the dead top of a 5-ft. Baccharis, in
a large clump of Baccharis, Palos, & Rhus, in a
meadow. There was another bird, probably the
mate, but could not get it.
All through
the area, in the coastal scrub, white-crowns
are common and often heard singing. Both
the birds detailed tonight had some fat.
June 21 In the same general area this afternoon, the
road leading to Palmari Nursery. The area
is mainly pasture, with large clumps of
brush as described above. The birds are very
many and hard to get; got one 1st year bird
out of a flock of 6 or 8, in a weedy area between
two dried fields. Saw one bird carrying food.
rest. Saw fully grown young of the year, and
from behavior judge they are on a second (a late)
brood. They seem to be in groups, or very close
territories. Some were in fields of cut hay, in
these brushy areas I also found Thryomanes benichi,
Oplebona verlescens, Melospiza melodia, Chamosa
fasciata, and one flock of Psaltriparus.
In the fields
were Sturnella neglecta, and Azelais phoenicea.
