Barks 1958 Journal a. 5 Feb, 1958 Reel Rock Island, San Francisco Bay, Cal. Visited here with Paul Anderson, who is studying the salamanders of this & other bay islands. Today is cloudy and slightly windy. This island is small, but very steep rather high, the only birds seen on the island were 2 Sturnisola leucophrys and Melospiza melodia. On the way to the island saw Western Gull & Bonaparte Gulls, and a flight of 10 Cormorants. At the dock just while waiting for the boat saw American and Surf Scoters, Puddly Duck, American Wigeon, Am. Goldfinch, and also arrived to dock saw Scamp & Camarhack. Arrived at island about 9:30, stayed till 11:00. Found Cormorant skull on shore. Island is completely covered with vegetation except steep slopes. Achillea, lilies, Baccharis, cummin rose lots of grass, and 'pea vine'. While walking the beach saw an Artist's mucalaria. Found a dead gull, art. plumage, good shape. See sp. acct. Also found a synonym of something. Found a badly decomposed bird, looks like a gull. Saved what was left of skull (looks), humerus, coracoid and a primary. With this bird was part of a cormorant(?) skull. See late notes for identification of these things.
