Left Berkeley, Calif., about 8:30 a.m. on April # 5
for annual meeting of Cooper Ornithological
Society in Tucson, Ariz. Ned K. Johnson, John
Ralph and I were the only Berkeley students going.
Drove to a point east of Blythe, Calif., the first
day, camped along the road. Arrived Tucson
about 3 p.m. on Friday, Apr. #
Apr. 7 12 mi S Florence, Pinal Co., Ariz. Stopped here
on the way to Tucson, walked for about an
hour (12:30-1:30 pm) in the desert. The plants
of the area were mesquite, cholla, barrel
cactus, etc. Very flat land with a number of
washes not over 3 ft. deep. Birds seen were:
Phainopepla Ash Throated Flycatcher
Desert Sparrow Linnet
Flicker sp. Harris Hawk
Sandel Snail Red Tailed Hawk
Morning Dove Ladder Backed Woodpecker
Carthus Whew Turkey Vulture
John and Ned added to the list: Gila Woodpecker,
Verdin, and a few other species.
Saw Antelope(?) Ground Squirrel and Cottontail,
and Cremidophorus. There was sign of badger
and deer, to say nothing of Dipodomys + other
small rodents.
Also along the road from Florence to Tucson,
saw Prairie Falcon, perhaps White-necked Raven.
