Snyder Ranch, 500 ft. W of the W Colorado River, Clark G., Nevada
Apr. 2 Tried this morning to get back to our camp in
the trees, but got stuck in the mud. Walked in
and picked up our traps, all empty. Put the
birds we had left over from yesterday. Just
before noon Mr. Snyder came by. In answer to
several questions we found the following: No deer
in area; there are White-winged Doves, but it is
early for them; nothing that fits description of a
cardinal; there is a hot cave nearby, and a
lake (which we will try to get to); he has seen
"white owls" occasionally, and there are long
owls and screech owls; occasionally in the
winter he has seen very small owls. In the afternoon
walked for about an hour on the desert looking
for lizards - not a sign of a reptile. There were
a zillion grasshoppers and lots of Painted Lady Butter-
flies, and many Audubon Warblers. Shot a Rock
Wren at the top of a wide wash. While up in
the desert I could hear amphibians calling in the
willows. Finally found the place on the map
as intermittent water, a shallow slough with
Tamarisk growing in it. Lots of frogs (Spadefoot,
I guess) but I couldn't get any. Saw some doves,
and several Snipes. Ned was downstream a
little where the water forms a small pond
and got 2 Hyla regilla. About 5 P.M. we unstuck
car and moved camp.
