July 11 .8 mi S Kaiser Pass, 8800 ft, Fresno Co., Calif.
Tales and burrows of small mammals. No
sign of reptile of any sort. Back to camp at
10. Put up my birds, had lunch, broke
camp, and headed home. New birds today:
Velsie Warbler
Pileolated Warbler
Mt. Junail (young 1 or 2 days old)
Green-tailed Towhee
Olive-sided Flycatcher.
Found the nest of a Western Tanager.
Wednesday, near the summit, saw 2
Band-tailed Pigeon. Hummingbirds are
thick here, lots of chasing. Could not
shoot nor identify them. I believe that
the Solitary Vireo reported earlier was an
error. Both Cassin Finch + Western Tanager
have been making nests very similar to
the Vireo ones.
Drove to the summit to
take some pictures. Saw Golden-mantled
Ground Squirrel at top. As I left, it was
-thundering, and clouding up. It is just
250 mi. from the summit to Berkeley (MV2)
July 14+6 MV2 - Spent parts of these three days
putting up the birds brought back from
Harts Pass once. They are not in very good
shape, most being soft + beginning to slip on the
belly. All these birds are fat. Many or all seem
a little emaciated from drying out on feet.
