Barke 1954 Chordeiles minor - Nighthawk 3.1 mi. N, 1 mi. W Fort Dick, Del Norte Co., Calif. sea level June 12. Why first evening in this camp June 9, I heard nighthawks calling. Heard them several other times, and tonight finally saw them. There were at least 2, perhaps 4- I couldn't keep track of them. They were feeding quite high over the weedy brushy pastures + riparian woods, as well as over the river. I got one shot and missed. Now, as I write these notes, I can hear them flying overhead, giving their characteristic "peach" note. June 13 Brookings, Curry Co., Oregon. - Just about noon, as I stopped in this town, heard and saw nighthawks flying over the town. June 22 2 mi S, 3 mi E Westport, sea level, Clatsop Harba Co., Osh. Walking along an old railroad bed leading into a cut, very brushy area, I heard 1 or 2 of these birds. Saw and heard one dive "boom" from a height of perhaps 100 ft, it held its wings back up and come down at about a 45 degree angle - at the bottom it apparently spread its wings and the air rushing thru caused the boon, actually a "whoom" - very similar to an Anna Hummingbird, only more. It dove straight at me twice, pulling out of the dive about 10 ft over my head - straight on view looked like: \w/ , I shot it as it dove [RCB 6/4, toward me, blowing off a good part of its left wing.
