Balds 1959 Horned Owl - Bubo virginianus June 9 3, min N, 1 mi W Fort Bridg, sealevel, Del Norte Co, Calif. As I arrived here at 2 p.m. heard a 2-note call of this owl: hoo-hooooo. Later in pm. heard it again, several times on each occasion. During the afternoon, in the riparian-redwood woods, many times heard a "three" sound, thought it was a Red-tailed Hawk somewhere. I noticed the small birds, esp. Russet-Backed Thrushes, several times set up a fuss with alarm notes. About dusk heard the sounds again & investigated. There were 2 large but mostly dowry young owls which I assume are this species. They are capable of some flight, as one flew from one branch to another. I did not see adults. After dark they apparently moved, as I can hear the sneezes in another direction now.
