Banks 1959 Zonotrichia leucophrys May 10 Month Ia Mile Prairie, sea level Mendocino C. Calif. other was more common and the trill was preceded by 3 notes, which sounded like "wee dee wee trill" . --I---, Sometimes the last note was the twist mentioned earlier - a buzzy note - but this seemed to be optional. Most birds were singing this way. Of the birds shot today, F+H+I were all feeding together. Most or all the others seemed to be in mated pairs. J, K, +L were obviously so, J+K honing, by the sounds, just separated. L was territorial, M was paired. B+C were singing, as was L, all the second song type. Got two more birds late in the late early afternoon (2-3 pm). On way back, saw no birds between Mendocino and Albion, but saw and heard birds between Albion and Elk, where there seems to be better habitat. See journal. Of the birds collected May 9, all seem to be in breeding condition; all BB had cloacal protuberances, the F was about ready today. Following is a list of this weekends specimens, with comments.
