Ceneral Account 23 July - Up at 1030 and Rovenela and I got our gear and food ready for the trip to the Savievik River, Andy came up from Bettle about 1300. First we flew up the Colville to determine where he had put his decoy on the previous trip. It turned out to be the Colomnogamet R. in stead of the Killik as I had first thought. Andy was a bit embarrassed but readily admitted the mistake. We flew on up the Colville a little way seeing some moose and caribou and then turned back to the Killik. Flew up the Killik 40-50 miles; following up OKp. Kusevat branch, and then out over to the drainage of the Chandelier and down it to Unist. Both Killik and Chandelier have some spectacular bluffs on them but especially the Chandelier. Around the fork ca 20 mi N of Castle Blt there are several miles of sandstone with rock. Saw golden eagle, several rough leg - one on a nest and just below the forks we flew right over a gap where could see two fledged or near fledged yagys sitting on the ledge. Cliff over looked the river. Most of the sandstone "jiries" and back from the river a little ways. Extremely in- vesting country. We were back at Unist around 1700, spent some time refueling and reading Nacel's messages and then off to the Savievik R. Arrived at the lake at 2000 and found a floating messing and memorials of the Army site #5 - lots of C.-nation caused food and gas left. Andy ate steaks with us and left ca 2030. I spent next two hours looking for Hansen's 1955 transect but saw no signs of markers within a mile around NE end of lake. Conclude he did not set up a marked line (his notes do not indicate), so I established a new line in the habitat that he trapped. Two long- tailed jaegers are established in the area and several waves have been seen "from this" on the sandstone near Mr. Mordy, they seem to be living at the refuge around the old camp. Mites all over everything. Birds seen: pair of Bovia avellis on lake several Clangula hyemalis "" Sterna paradisaea "" Pleurialis dominica

Cade 956 General Account - Scioto River 24 July - Up at 0800. Ran traps around 1000 and spent rest of morning skiving, afternoon skiving and writing up notes. Took photos of the transect and also two photos of trap sites with Eremurus slic. in the traps, Went down to the river with Kovanda in the afternoon and we looked around and collected some plants, Ran the transect again in the evening. 25 July - To bed ca 0100 and up at 0930. Ran the transect and spent rest of morning and early afternoon skiving and writing up notes. - Several spotted sandpipers seen along the river. - Four long-tailed jaegers flying over the transect in early morning. Ravens present locally at cee times. Helped Kovanda run his transect in the bottom land in the afternoon, and then ran my transect again after dinner. Around 2300 saw a wolf - big adult - about 60 yds below camp. Shot at him with .22, missed, and he ran to the river as fast as he could. Wolf tracks seen early along an old meander of the river and a skull of one was found by Kovanda. To bed at 2400. Saw several Clem. piqui's along the river? 26 July - Up at 0800. Ran traps in morning, wrote up notes, and helped Kovanda with his transects. We walked over to the uplands west of lake in the afternoon. Saw a gyrfalcon ca 100 yds S. of camp at edge of lake. It was carrying a mouse. Stopped on a typtock at bank of lake and began eating. As we approached it flew off and circled up and down over us. Saved three times it bent its head down and bit the mouse in its talons. It drifted 5 yds an area where two jaegers were flying. Suddenly, a much smaller falcon (peregrine?) dived at the gyrfalcon from above. It did not injure it. It flew for some 10meters while I watched through binocs. Both seemed reluctant to flip over as usual. Both falcons flew out of sight. 6-7 old squacco on the lake 9 scoup and 3 crows on the lake. K saw a pair of young pternistigas - flying - below camp, I flushed 2 &1 and one cock in vicinity of camp. Several Ocarthis boonei along river in willows. Took up traps in the evening. Andy arrived about 2000, and we broke camp. Left at Union around 2330.

T. Cade 1956 General Account 27 July - Went out with Ben Yeller and a couple of USBS boys in my weasel to help them fish another weasel out of a lake where it had submerged yesterday. Left Uniat around 0100, went swimming at the lake and took first bath since leaving Barrow. Back at Uniat around 0330 and to bed. Up at 1030. Spent rest of day unpacking stuff from the Savonnet trip and helping Kovanda get his stuff ready to take back to Barrow. We left around 2000 in the evening, To bed at 2300. [illegible] 28 July - Up at 1100. Spent the day hiking, it was [illegible] cleaning up groundset, and working with the fields. 28 July - Went out with Ben on a hunting trip. Gone most of the day. We went out around T2 and T7 and rop over the hill behind the oil well. Picked up the steel traps on the hill and net them out at the dump for quells and waven. 28 July - Up at 0800. Checked traps and had caught current adult fox. Spent most of day inside, as it was raining all day. Saw another fox by the dump in the evening. Also some large fresh wolf tracks. 30 July - Ben and I went out on all day trip to look for a ford across the river to the big island opposite Uniat Mt. We found we could cross in several places with not much difficulty. Spent several hours driving weasel up and down dry stream beds on the island. Then crossed back over below Uniat Mt. Examined peregrine and vaughley aeries on Uniat Mt. Back to Uniat around 2100. The weasel threw another track just after we got started this morning, but we were able to prize it back on again.
