General Account
30 June
Note: the account of the next five and 1/2 days
is reconstructed from notes taken under
the assumption that we had been landed
on the Colwill, approx. 10 mi. above the mouth
of the Otei lat. Subsequently it proved that
we had in fact been landed on the upper
Olonmogarik Killek, and by re-tracing our steps we
are able to fix the spot as a small lake
c. 5 miles up the Killek from its confluence
with Easter Creek. How a bush pilot could
fly this trip up and back to Otei twice
without discovering the error is beyond me.
Andy, the Wien pilot at Bettles, came in to Otei
about 12.30 to take us up-river. I went up on the
first haul to establish the landing point. On
the way we saw half a dozen moose and one
grizzly bear in the river bottom. Flew close by
several falcon bluffs but did not see any birds.
We landed on a small lake between the Otei River
and Easter Creek, about one mile from the former
and c. 5 miles above the mouth of the latter. On the
second trip Andy brought up Ben Byeller, Hal
Webster and the rest of the gear. The remainder of the
day was spent packing the stuff over to the river. We
have about 700 lbs of duffle etc. We were finally
established in a camp across the river on a gravel
bar around 2000.
