General Account
24 May-
Left L.A. international at 0800 via
United Airlines to Seattle. Arrived there
at 1330 Seattle time and transferred to
Pan Am, leaving for Fairbanks at 1400.
Arrived Fairbanks at 1810, their time.
John Brackley and his family met me
at the airport and took me out to
College, where I had a room reserved
in one of the new men's dorms, the
Andrew J. Measland Hall.
27 May
Remained on campus all day talking
to various people and reading various
field reports Brackley wanted me to
see. Had a brief visit with Olaus
Murie just before he was to go down
to Anchorage to give some talks to
boost the plans for setting aside
the wilderness area of the eastern
Brooks Range. He seemed to be quite
encouraged by the local enthusiasm
for such a withdrawal. Also had a chance
to read George Schaller's report on the
Sheenjek River last year. He had some
observations from the head of the Iago
River - one of them was of Snow lemmings with
fireflies.
