Code 1954 Weather and Phenology 12 June noon. At the USGS hut at 1015 it was 1.5°C in shade and 4.2°C in sun near a white wall. At 1130 the same areas were 2°C and 8°C respectively. About 1800 it started to cloud up again and by 2000 there was a solid overcast. At 2100 it was snowing lightly and has continued to now (2340). Temp out of the wind near = -0.2°C. Temp of shallow (6 inch max.) meltwater pond = 1.2°C No noticeable change in plant growth. Looked at some Betula nana on the hillside near T-3. The leaves were still very small and reddish. More appear to be opening. Ericophorum is blooming all over the slopes in the center of T-3. 13 June Clear and warm all day. Only clouds seen were few off over Brooks Range. Maximum thawing. Very light wind from NE-E - less than 5mph. At 1300 on the south slope leading up to Unist Mt., the surface 10mm deep of an Ericophorum hummock was 17°C. Three inches deep it was 6°C. The air shaded was 18°C and in sun 20°C. At 2400 the temp was 14°C in sun light, 30°C in shade. Water of a melting snow bank (max depth 6 in.) was also 3°C. On the south slopes of Unist Mt., some Ericophorum is shedding pollen. All are shaded out. A few Pedicea lavas (weaver's sedge) are blooming, as well as a sweet 5 petaled whitish flower with yellow stamens. [illegible]
