Cade 1958 General Account 27 June Coal Mine-Mead River, Alaska This morning Brock and I tried to go up river in the ARL boat with a 7½ horse motor. Unfortunately the river was too low for crossing the numerous bars, so after making about 5 miles and breaking three shearing pins, we gave it up and came back. We had to row the last mile or so because we ran out of shearing pins. We left camp at 1045 and returned at 1600. In the meantime, a Piper plane came in and left us some additional supplies-meat and mosquito repellent. Another plane came in around 1700-two CAA fellows from Barrow, who were out inspecting cabins. At 2045 I crossed the river to run Tle while Brock went out to T728. Returned at 2200. Weather today about the same as yesterday- intermittently cloudy and sunny in the morning- mostly sunny and warm in the afternoon, with solid overcast and rain in the distance toward the mountains in the late evening. Went out for short walk around camp from 2300 to 2345. 28 June - Rain throughout most of the night. Still overcast in the morning. Strong westerly wind with some rain beginning 1245. Went out
