17 June - Left San Francisco International on
United flight 759 at 1425 (15 min. late)
and Arrived Seattle 1804 Pacific Standard
time. Ate dinner at the airport - cost
$3.10. Left Seattle via Pan Am flight
911 at 2230 (30 min. late).
18 June Arrived Fairbanks at 0450. Breakfast
at the airport - cost $1.05. Left via
Wien for Barrow at 0900 - arrived
at 1260. On the plane I met Morrow
Chance, anthropologist from Oklahoma,
who is going to Baster Island to study
social conditions of Eskimos in the new
college there. Also saw Fred Milan
briefly at the airport. Ibe introduced
Chance.
May already had a bush flight ar-
ranged for the afternoon. At 1407 Royal
Shanks, Bill Maher, and I made the
same survey flight east of Barrow
that May and Rosanda and I made
last year. Bob Fisher was pilot. The
following is the itinerary and two of my
observators. See Maher's notes for plot of
exact route taken. We flew at 300 to 200
feet most of the way with air speed of
80-90 miles per hour. Visibility was excellent
to good except for the last 10 minutes,
