11 June Unicat, Alaska
around the installation, Eriophorum has
not yet headed out, but I noticed that
some leeches at Unicat Lake had blossoms.
But no pollen shedding. Vaccinium vitis-idaea
is greening up some.
The ground vegetation here looks dense
and lush by comparison with the station
at Barrow. White tussocks, however,
are conspicuous everywhere.
The river is completely free of ice and
is running fast and high.
Many of the lakes are still almost completely
ice-bound. Others, such as Unicat Lake,
show open water in their shallow portions.
Both ends of Unicat Lake are ice free.
In general I should say, judging from
what I could see from the air, that out about
15-20% of the snow cover from winter remains.
Some of the largest patches locally are on the
sheltered slopes N of Unicat and W of Unicat
Mt.

It was only partly cloudy - mostly sunny, when I
get up at 1000, with moderate or 5 mph or less wind
from NE. Wind continued all day, getting stronger
toward evening. It continued to clear during the day,
and the sky was almost free of clouds in early after-
