General Account
4 June
we had been correctly interpreting the reign
or lack of reign at Barrow.
The snow was gone off the high centers but
was still present in the drainage ditches, all
around the edges of the melting snow where-
where we walked saw a course of ca half a
mile fresh runway and bright queen
droppings were seen. The runways frequently
went into conspicuous holes under the snow.
We found two winter nests.
We did not see a live lemming but
during the two hours we were at the
village half a dozen kids brought in a
total of 31 animals. This is again in
strong contrast to the situation at Barrow
where we have been able to obtain less
than 20 from the kids in more than a
week's time. We will certainly want to
keep tabs on this area all summer.
It will be worth finding out whether some
predators attempt to breed in this area
this year. At present it does not look like
Wainwright is "in please" with Barrow.
We returned to Barrow via the same
route. Visibility not so good but good enough
to see jagers.
