28 May - Went out with John Buckley and Burt Libby at 0800 along the Steese Highway to Twelve-mile Summit, where one of the FWS pilots had reported seeing a dead grizzly bear and cub about a mile off the highway—presumably having been recently shot. He also reported seeing a live cub near the dead animals. When we arrived, we soon saw the live cub—a yearling—which ran off when we approached. A little later I spotted the carcasses, but to our surprise, they had apparently lain since last fall, as they were bloated and rotting fast. We weighed them and lopped off their heads and left. Also saw about nine cavilion in the area. Coming back, at mile 25.4 we found a sheep's nest.
29 May Left Fairbanks international at 0800 for Barrow. We stopped briefly at Bettles for gas, and I said hello to Andy Anderson and made tentative plans to do some flying with him this summer. Arrived at Barrow 1130 and got to ARL via Vein's bus service. Found Brock and Maher already encoursed in
