4 July
to locate his pistol and cartridge belt in
3 feet of water now 20 yds below the accident,
and they were recovered. Also lost was most
of our cooking suit. A couple of the pots were
found a mile or so down river. I had a
record, light paddle which Ben earned. He
could hold it for only 10-15 minutes when the blade
snapped right off the handle, so he had to pole
and slice his boat the rest of the day. Wind came
up, and weather turned bad, so we put ashore
on a gravel bar at our next meeting with Web.
We put everything out to dry off, etc., and
raked out about 1200.
5 July
Got up at 1000 after 22 hours of wind and
rain. Saw now out enough to dry things
off. Spent miserable night under one of the
boats. Wind blew the rain right under.
After breakfast, Ben set to work repairing the
carve paddle while Web and I went scouting
ground squirrels for the falcons. We departed
this camp at 1430, with Web still walking
but soon the water got better, and with
our lightened load, he was able to ride
with Ben. Weather was good, so we travelled
right on through the "night".
6 July
Hit the mouth of the [illegible] River about 0030,
