T. Cade 1959 General Account 20 May - cont. 15-20 miles, hittuing the coast again at Point Loy. 1608 - gow the site at Point Loy. First large area of melt-off water on lagoon ice just south of Point Loy. From there on the whole landscape began to clear rapidly. I have found no sign of melt-off anywhere along the coast or inland before Point Loy. Perhaps on top of some of the ridges there had been a start, but less than 1% of therefore was exposed. From Beaufort on, the upper hilly regions presented an aspect which generally gave the impression that about 50-60% of the ground was free of snow. The low Tincheva creeks immediately along the coast appeared to be about 20-30% free of snow. Some creeks and rivers have opened, but others not, but there does not seem to be any correlation with time of breakup and size - both large & small streams may be open or closed. 1635 - passed cape Beaufort. 1700 - down on bar at Pitmeger.
