I. Case 1957 General Account 3 June - cont for riders. We saw a few small flocks and one small group of old squaws. 4 June Flew in a Cessna 140 with Brewer and Maker to Wainwright and Back to Barrow in the afternoon. We left Barrow at 3 p.m. and traveled at 700-500 feet altitude and ca. 6-10 miles inland. Visibility was good. We saw a few jaegers (see Maker's notes for details) and one Snowy Owl just before we landed at Wainwright. Also a good number of water- leel of various sorts. The tundra was ca. 60% bare of snow. Arrived at Wainwright ca. 1600 and there we met Mr. and Mrs. Crawford, the school teachers. We made arrangements with Mr. Crawford to receive lemmings for us from the Eskimo Kids at 50ยข a piece. After some further talk, Maker and I went out onto the tundra adjacent to the village. Most of the ground we covered was high-center polygon type. Fresh lemming signs was common everywhere, and the look of the ground due to the presence of lemmings was in marked contrast to the ground conditions at Barrow.
