Sorex crenatus hollisteri
July 12, Savoonga, St. Lawrence Is., Bering Sea,
Alaska. Three pairs teats in ♀ (1 inguinal,
1 lower abdominal, 1 upper abdominal)
The neck of a Least Auklet, Caught in a
rat trap, had been eaten out by what
was probably a Shrew. Perhaps these
voracious devils live off the eggs &
restings of the Least Auklets in
the rookeries. Apparently they
are found, in summer at least,
in the rock piles where auklets
rest - I caught them nowhere
else. In winter however, the
Natives claim that they come
into the villages & eat the meat
in the houses. Caught during the
day as often as night.

Aug 24. I did not catch a single Shrew
during my whole Stay of almost four
weeks, tho I trapped assiduously for
them. The natives know what they are
and say that they are to be found
in the houses, in the old village sites,
and in the meat cellars. I gave traps
