Gilmore RHINOCERAS AUKLET 1931 Oct. 4. Urnala Pass, N. Alcutun Is. Spic. m. 2228 was shot from the bow of the "Kanaga Native" while we were cruising thru the pass in a light fog. Only a few of these birds were to be seen on the still waters, and then they might easily be confused with immature Horned Puffins Oct. 24. Akun Straits, E. Alcutun Is. Today I saw about four-five of these large auklets. Invariably, each bird was alone and tried to escape by diving. I never saw one take wing. Generally they frequented the open passes between the rocks & islands, and occasionally were to be found close to shore in some sheltered light. They fed heavily upon pilot-fish, as their oesophagus held at least many as 50-75 fish. Oct. 31. Alcutun Pass E. Alcutun Is. Today while headed east on the outer I saw several birds. Again each was alone and escaped by diving. Attempts to take wing were unsuccessful.
