RED TAILED HAWK Buteo borealis
May 31 Unalaska, Unalaska Is. Alaska
Several pairs seen in the hills. Very
light colored.
Sept. 6 Unalaska, Unalaska Is., Aleutians.
In the hills above Captain's Harbor, I
saw several of these hawks. They
soared or hovered over the hill tops
in a stiff west wind. They uttered no
sound.
Sept. 19 Saw one about noon on the
penile ridge west of Needle Peak. It
was evidently curious to see just what
I was for it appeared from nowhere
and soared 50-60 yards over my
head until a load of buckshot
changed its mind. These hawks seem
to be quite scarce this fall, perhaps
the sailors from the cutters have
taken toll of the population.
