546 WHEATKAR Aug.17 Tigara, Ft.Hope, Alaska Spec. 1903 in the first I have seen. It was accompanied by another which disappeared at the report of the gun. I first noticed the bird as it was bending over a squirrel trap. It was hopping along a gravelly ridge on the tundra & its companion was 10 yds away. At my first movement it flew about 20 yds farther off Aug 18 (Same locality) Spec. no. 1907 was taken off while it was perched on the gravelly tundra, sparsely grown with grass, near the school house. It was alone. The distinguishing feature of sight identification is the pure white upper & lower tail covert & rump and the black tip to the end of the tail. The rest of the bird has a light creamy brown appearance. Aug 19 - First day of abundance. Generally seen perched on some hummocks on the tundra where they had alighted. They were quite wary flying before me at a distance of 30-75 yds with exasperating monotony. The momentum
