398 Gilmore HARLEQUIN DUCK D 1931 The flocks fly in compact bunches and hang low over the water. Oct. 13 Akutan Bay, Akutan Is., W. Aleutians. Fairly common here—Have seen several flocks of a dozen or so in each, swimming several hours of strolling along the rocky beaches. Today when I rowed down the bay in a skiff I believe I saw a Rock Duck disappear under a rock cliff much as Swanson had reported. The single bird was in the water close to a small rocky cliff and dove. I never saw it come up so presume that it disappeared into some cave or recess under the cliff. In the small rocky outcrop on the beach 100 yds N.E. of the whaling station, Mr. Rungler says that four years ago a Rock Duck raised a litter of young successfully. Oct. 24 Akun Straits, E.
