402 Gilmore OLD SQUAW DUCK ② 1931 Found in numbers all along the coast & back on all the lakes & ponds. Groups vary from singles & flocks of 20-75—the pairs are commonest. Curt Hope, Arctic Ocean, Alaska Aug 6 Saw great numbers in the many miles of lagoons between here and Cape Thompson. They are congregating in flocks now & resting seems to be about over tho I saw no fledglings. It's seem to be in the flocks. Aug 6. Found a dead bird on Small Lagoon 1/2 mile N.E. Wing feathers gone after moult & body was in emaciated condition (Specimen 836) and the kidneys greatly enlarged & pale in color. Aug 7 — found another dead bird with wing flight feathers gone from moult. Saw a live one with flight feathers gone — it escaped from the johns & the water when it dove swam away, attempting to dive in the shallow water.
