Gilmore 1931 CACKLING GOOSE (D) Oct. 3 W. Aleutian Is. According to Capt. Henry Swanson, these geese were once much more common than they are now, but their numbers have been much depleted by the foxes planted on the islands. Now the Cackling Goose is quite rare - seen only occasionally - and I have not seen any to date. He states that they are quite evenly distributed throughout the islands tho out west (Atka, etc.) he has seen larger flocks. Oct. 29 Lieut. Commander H. Bradbury of the "Northland" reports having visited Baldin Is. in the W. Aleutians in some of his former cruises, and there the Cackling Goose nested by the thousands. The nests were located on the grassy ground on top of the island.
