Gilmore Ruddy Turnstone
1931
St. Michael, Alaska, June 8
Quite Common on Marshes.
July 20 Teller Mission, Port Clarence, Alaska
On flat wide gravelly creek bed I make questionable sight identification
of this bird. Black & white is all I can say for the distinctive
marks, as it was very shy & would not allow me within
gun shot.
Point Hope, Arctic Ocean, Alaska.
July 29 when walking to reindeer camp I saw several of these birds & shot one
which mysteriously disappeared from the
small tent at the camp. Evidently these
birds rested for they were quite perturbed
at my intrusion. Flying about &
then alighting on the gravel. They
uttered a peculiar cry when in the air.
The specimen obtained showed the
Typical black & white head & neck,
white breast & reddish back.
Aug 13 Spec. 1882 was shot on bare
gravelly tundra. Another was present
which, this wounded, made good its escape.
They are the first seen since July 29.
