578 Almoy Thalaretor (2) 1931 June 24, 1931 Sevoonga St. Lawrence Is., Bering Sea, Alaska Today two polar bears were killed by the natives from a whale boat far out on the ice. They were a mother & a cub and were found swimming along between the cakes of ice & shot. The killing of a polar bear is quite an achievement and is attended by a shot ceremony at the spot where the bear is killed. When skinned the skin of the nose is left on. This peculiar thing is practiced on all seal also but not the walrus. The skulls of polar bear are religiously guarded & finally placed upon the graves of the hunter. Native name is "Nanook". Point Hope, Alaska Arctic Ocean Aug. 24 About a dozen were killed here this spring. Evidently they are more numerous than farther south to this year, one was killed at St. Michael.
