June 24, 1931 Sevoonga St. Lawrence Is.,
Bering Sea, Alaska
Today two polar bears
were killed by the natives from
a whale boat far out on the ice.
They were a mother & a cub and
were found swimming along between
the cakes of ice & shot. The
killing of a polar bear is quite an
achievement and is attended by
a shot ceremony at the spot
where the bear is killed. When
skinned the skin of the nose is
left on. This peculiar thing is
practiced on all seal also but
not the walrus. The skulls of
polar bear are religiously guarded
& finally placed upon the graves
of the hunter.
Native name is "Nanook".
