602. Silmo Odobenus Walrus O 1931 June 3 Walrus were seen on the ice of Norton Sound. There were several bunches of 4-6 sitting in huddled masses on the ice. The ice where they stay is often quite dirty from the soft sea bottom brought up on their tusks when they feed. Nearly all the Bering Sea is under 30 fathoms. June 24, 1931 Sevonga, St. Lawrence Is., Bering Sea, Alaska. Several walrus have been killed by the natives the last few days and the shooting during this time of the ice break-up is almost continuous throughout the day & short night. Mr. Beist and the natives claim claim that the 9 walrus tend to go with the retreating ice along its eastern part and the males on the western part, thus these are mostly B's claimed killed at Sevonga & the catch at Gambell is almost entirely Q's and young.
