Gilmore CRESTED AUKLET (2) 1931 June 21-July 13, Savoonga, St. Lawrence Ils., Bering Sea, Alaska Saw a great many of these birds during my stay but the great majority were noticed flying over the water. I found no rookeries where they nested in appreciable numbers, tho a very few did nest among the Least Auklets. When in the whale boats they were much in evidence and flocks of 50-100 + more were common - generally on the wing. Their red bill & general dark color are distinctive for the. The quail-like crest cannot be noticed until one is within 25 yds or so. The natives kill great numbers, using the flesh for meat, the crown for declarations on rain coat, & the rest of the skin for parkas cold weather parkas. Point Hope, Arctic Ocean, Alaska.
