Spotted or Harbor Seal
which is generally what happens
2 out of 3 times. One boat got
51 seal in a morning hunting
off broken shore ice. In winter
when the shubber is thicker the
seals sink less often.
They are used for food, oil,
& leather. Often they are skinned
from the mouth so that the
finished skin has a hole at
the mouth & anus only. The
mouth is sewed shut & an
airy plug inserted in the anus.
These skins may thus be filled
with air by blowing & used
for floats, "poaks".

Aug 15: These seals seem to be very
Curious - they rose out of the
water, exposing head & buck, to
stare at me sit on the beach, &
hold its position for a minute or
so before they sank from sight
perhaps to come up nearby
& repeat the investigation.
