Gilmore SHORT EARED OWL (3) 1931 was disrupted. Oct. 20 Akutan Bay Spec. 2276 was taken in same place as the above, and 9 others were also seen. Mr. Kugler states that a month ago when berry picking was on, these owls were not seen in this place at all. Thus it seems likely that they have just recently assembled. This one had remains of a Microtus in its stomach. Undoubt- ably mice form its principal source of food. Oct. 21 Akutan Bay. Spec. 2284 was shot as flew over the water from some long grass at the head of the beach. In these country with no trees, these owls roost on the ground & seem to prefer the side of a hill, tho this one was at least 300 yds from the nearest hill and was almost on the Sandy beach. So far I have not heard them utter any sounds.
