1931 There are large colonies. They
seem to prefer high sandy or rocky
places near the beach. Natives
call them tsik-tsik.
Igara, Point Hope, Alaska, Arctic Ocean
Aug 8. Have seen squirrels,
"Sigitik," along the South side
of the spit from the village of
Igara to Cape Thompson. They
inhabit the hammocks in the
tundra & old sod houses are
a favorite place. They are quite
numerous & often allow a close
approach so it is a comparatively
easy matter to get them with
a shotgun. The "sure catch" rat
traps don't even phase them. One
squirrel lost an eye upon being
hit on the head by such trap
& the next day I shot it as it
was foraging about its burrow.
They seem to eat the green leaves
of a certain plant that grows quite
abundantly here. I have saved
the cheek pouch contents of Nov
1873 & 1874. Only when surprised
