619. Microtus Elmore 1931 May 31 Uralaska, Uralaska Is., Alaska Runway thru grass & tundra are very common but population is scattered. Caught two in one runway near snowbank & one at mouth of squirrel burrow. June 7 St. Michael, Alaska No. 1532 was caught as it ran into small pipe near abandoned Ravi steamer 15 miles S. E. St. Michael. Out on these damp tundra flats, with many ponds, was numerous runways. Nos. 1533-37 were caught in 2½ hours in line of 24 traps set on Whale Is. 1:30 P.M.- 4:00 P.M. The island is about 50-75 acres in extent & 60-70 ft high at south end. 50' high at north end. Whale island is 1/4 mile from St. Michael. Tundra & birch, Labrador tea & chicken, sedge and thick gross was dry; runways plentiful. Foggy day! It's have an area of fatty tissue adhering to the skin of the buttocks and a pair of fatty glands at the base of the tail. Tail on buttocks is shorter than elsewhere.
