BLACK FOOTED ALBATROSS Gilmne Black Footed Albatross Diomedia mezripes 1931 May 5, 1931 - three of these birds picked up the ship after we had been out of the bay for several hours. They were immature birds & the white around the base of the bill showed plainly as they glided gracefully over the top of the waves some 50 yds. astern. By night fall there were three + one showed the white rump patch of a two + year old bird. They are known as "goonies" by the sailors. May 6, 1931 Today as we cruised up along the Calif coast to about Crescent City, these birds were still following in the wake of the vessel or at times would vie with the gulls for the scrap thrown from the galley.
