380 Gilmore 1931 EMPEROR GOOSE (3) nick of land separating the main body of the lagoon from the ocean thousands of these geese may be seen circling about or feeding on the succulent grass. Sept. 19. Unalaska, Unalaska Is. Aleutians A flock of 12 Emperor, "Beach" Geese were reported today over by Captain's Harbor. These birds winter in these islands about here in great numbers, and this seems to be the first word this Fall of them. Oct. 2. English Bay, E. Unalaska Is. I saw two flocks of about a dozen each here today. One flock was sitting on the rocks of the south side of the mouth of the bay and the other flock flew overhead toward the marshes at the head of the bay. My Aleut Companion remarked that they were searching for fresh water. In flight they seem to have two notes. One is a low short nasal grunt, evidently just a sociable chatter, and the other is a high falsetto note sung uttered in a striking monotone.
