Black Footed Albatross
S. nigripes ②
Filmed about 50 yds. astern. At Tonies
1931, we had as many as 6.
May 8, 1931 this morning about 9:00
AM. The "goonies" left us.
We were about 10-15 miles off
Tillamook Bay at the time. Perhaps
we were getting too close to land
for these pelagic wanderers. This
off, at 5:30 there was a lone
"goonie" in Juan de Fuca Strait
just off Port Angeles. It was
just seen a half mile in front of
the boat & seemed to be heading
away from the sea. They are seldom
seen so far away from the open sea?
"Goonie" = Black Footed Albatross
May 20 - off Yakutat Bay - two birds
followed the ship all morning until
the pistol practice at 1:00 P.M. drove
them away.
Oct. 2 Unalaska Is., Aleutian Is., Alaska
According to local report, "goonies"
are rarely seen on the Bering side
of the Aleutian Is.
