364 Silmoe FORK TAILED PETREL Oceanodroma furcata 1931. May 20 off S. St. Elias & Westwand. Saw a pair of these birds today - was on water & flew as we approached at about 50 yds. Sept. 25 Unalaska, Unalaska Is., Aleutian Is. Today I saw but one of these birds and secured it. It was resting on the water in the bay between Hog Island & Natitkini Bay and allowed us to approach it closely in the power boat. Locals report them scarce. Sept. 28 I saw two this morning off the south end of Amaknak Is.; in the minor harbor, and secured both. They were not together and seemed to be feeding. No. 2208 had evidently eaten a quantity of oil, for the stomach was full of an evil smelling oily mess. None of the three taken so far, have been fat. Oct. 2 Off just off Prust Rock in the S.E. end of Unalaska Bay I saw about a half dozen of these birds Their actions are quicker than their larger cousins, but the "whale birds"
